Mosaic Artists to Showcase Photographs, Performances, and Mock Medical Clinic

HAITI MEDICAL RELIEF FOCUS OF APRIL ARTWALK ‘THE HAITI ENCOUNTER’

Two medical teams who recently returned from Haiti will share their experiences at an art event to be held at the Rowan Gallery at Spring and 5th St. during the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk on April 8. The exhibit will include photographs taken by the teams, interpretive dance and music, an experiential mock medical clinic under tarps and tents, and spoken word performances of stories of survivors. There will also be information about how people can help bring aid to Haiti, and donations will be accepted.

The 8-person teams of doctors, nurses, and emergency personnel from Mosaic responded to the urgent call for medical providers to travel to Haiti in the wake of the earthquake which struck the country on January 13, 2010. “As soon as we got the logistics worked out, we were able to put our first team in the air just over a week later,” said Adrian Koehler of Mosaic, who led the first team. “The experience of treating patients in the midst of the devastation affected all of us profoundly, and we want to share it to inspire others. The people of Haiti are going to need support for years to come.”

The stories of survivors in their own words were compiled by team member Anson Yew, M.D, a family medicine doctor. Yew transcribed the stories in poetry form and they are being published with photographs in a book, ‘Stories from the Rubble,’ available from blurb.com.

Mosaic is a diverse, welcoming ministry which meets in various locations, including the Mayan nightclub on Main Street in downtown Los Angeles, where several hundred of the mostly young and hip gather at 7PM on Sunday evenings. Mosaic draws heavily from the creative community in LA, and artistic expression of many sorts is an integral part of the Mosaic culture. More information is available at Mosaic.org.

India Mtg & Orientation!

I am excited to hear about your interest in serving those in S. India!! Being part of the team that traveled to S. India last summer; we were all beyond moved to see first hand all the amazing things being done through Vikasitha & its outreach ministries. India is a country that has so many immediate needs from poverty, the aids epidemic, suicide rates, abandonment issues with children and widows....sadly the list goes on. Vikasitha has made a huge commitment by stepping into finding solutions for these issues and supporting those in need with spiritual and economic help. The leader and visionary at Vikasitha and his wife have done all this with very little outside financial help.

Beyond Us is committed to returning to Vijawada this summer to continue to invest and serve all those at Vikasitha and the outreach community there. There is an orientation this Sunday, February 14th after the Westside gathering for those interested in specifically joining the Fashion Team going to S. India this summer. Looking for additional people to join the team who have any of the following background in fashion/apparel, sewing knowledge, business and/or manufacturing. One of the main goals of the fashion team this summer is to help the women of the Self-Help center produce a product that can be sold here in the US to create a sustainable income for themselves and the Ministry in the future. So definitely looking for those ready to dream, create and invest in the lives of those at Vikasitha!! If you are interested, come to the orientation this Sunday to get more information and learn more details about the trip. If you have any questions or can't make it this Sunday, just contact me directly. Look forwarding to seeing you Sunday!

Sunday, February 14th, After Westside gathering around 12:45p in the front courtyard.
WEST L.A.
Beverly Hills High School
241 Moreno Dr, Beverly Hills

Feel free to pass on to those you may know who could be interested and have some of the background desired. If you are on this list and are no longer interested, please also let me know.

Thanks!!

Designers Needed for Hope in the City 2010 (fashion show)

We are so happy to be planning HOPE in the CITY 3: Wear your Story.

Hope in the City is a fashion event hosted by Mosaic-LA. Creatives within the fashion industry have come together to bring hope to Los Angeles! Hope in the City 3 will take place Spring 2010 (date TBD).

This year, Hope in the City will highlight 3 different facets of fashion:

1. An ESTABLISHED designer showcasing his/her collection.

2. EMERGING designers with an opportunity to showcase 14 garments in their collections.
3. EXPERIMENTAL designers, in which they will create an avant grande garment out of paper.

I invite you to take part in the Experimental section of our event and make a garment out of paper. A background in fashion design is not necessary, but an artistic eye and an openness to think outside the box is.

We will be providing you with the paper supplies (LA Weekly, 944 magazine or the LA Times) and you will be given 6 weeks to complete the garment. You must attend an introduction party on February 4th to be a part of our event.

If you are interested in applying to be featured as one of the EMERGING designers, please contact Julia LoVan at julesandthesea@gmail.com.

We have a limited number of experimental designers for this year’s event so please e-mail Corrie Sullivan (corriesullivan@gmail.com) ASAP to be considered. Corrie will then send you a brief application form.

This will be an amazing event and we hope you are as excited as we are.

Regards,

Mosaic-LA’s Hope in the City team
