Level 1 – Never touched a machine or have threaded a needle?
Level 2 – Have some working knowledge of sewing terms and machines. You can sew a straight line, hand sew a button, or hem a pant.
Level 3 – You can sew any simple item without help, read patterns and you just want to further your skills or do projects with others.
Kids – Minimum age must be at least 8 years old (must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 13)

Here’s a list of what you will learn:

Now that you know the basics of sewing, let's make a utility tote together. You will need to know the skills from Basic Sewing Part 1 for this class. We will provide a screen printed natural colored cotton canvas for this project.

We will provided printed cotton canvas fabric to make your choice of a throw pillow OR set of 4 coasters.

Learn how to hem pants/skirts, take in the body width of almost anything and shorten sleeves with cuffs. This class works best if you bring in something of yours that you’d like to alter.

This is a simplified version of the Basic Sewing Part 1 and a great way to introduce kids to the art of sewing. In this class they will learn to sew a tote bag using basic sewing skills.

These tools can be purchased at the store at 10% off if you are enrolled in a class.
The basic sewing kit should consist of:

- 2” transparent ruler

Internship in Venice, CA (for The Assault Factory)

You would be working for award-winning comic strip artist (and writer, short-film producer, many other artistic experiments & outlets!) David Malki, creator of Wondermark Comics. I'm imagining this as a threefold opportunity:
1. work part-time with the best in the business (of 2D visual comedy and internet comic strips and making a living from a website)
2. build a relationship with one of the most creative and influential persons in this niche (David Malki! Bibliophibian!)
3. be present in his life, and the lives of others in that niche, to pray, speak and act for Christ when the opportunity arises.
4. have David Malki tell you what to do with your day off, and spend a good chunk of it with him (since this is an unpaid one-day-per-week internship)

I am looking for an intern at my new base of operations, The Assault Factory, in Venice Beach! This is a one-day-a-week position starting very soon and extending tentatively through the San Diego Comic-Con in July. The position is unpaid, but meals will be provided as well as mileage reimbursement for any errands run on my watch. You will probably end up with some merch as well before the whole thing is said and done. I will sign any sort of school paperwork that you like — internship form? Hot-lunch voucher? Tardy slip? No problem. I also write killer letters of recommendation.
The ideal candidate is friendly, intelligent, vaguely familiar with the comic and my merchandise, and computer literate. Helpful (but not required) qualifications include: car ownership, facility with Photoshop, facility with Final Cut Pro, facility with WordPress, facility with nunchucks, and local to the West LA/Venice area — I hate asking people to drive across town. Although, of course, that’s your prerogative.

18th Street is a community which values art making as an essential component of a vibrant, just and healthy society. Our mission is to provoke public dialogue through contemporary art making.

For our 2010 exhibition year, 18th Street Arts Center is seeking proposals from artists, teams of artists, and curators which addresses a common theme; the status of our creative economy.



About Status Report: The Creative Economy

A creative economy is characterized by the key economic factors of talent, innovation and creativity. As the notion of a creative class is widely discussed, promoted and debated, it is apparent through recent research that these factors are not distributed evenly across the economy, but instead seem concentrated in specific locations. Where people gather is critical in stimulating new sources of grown, new idea generation, and an increase in productivity.

Los Angeles is often described as one of these places. After a turbulent economic year where do we stand? Are we on the way up, on the way down, or stuck in neutral? Who are the players and mediators in a creative economy, and how is it changing? Who is included and who is excluded? How are artists responding to seismic changes in the arts and culture market, and what are the new models they are developing to support the production of their work, and the dissemination of their ideas? How should our cultural institutions, both non - profit and for profit, be responsive to the overall health of the Los Angeles creative economy?

We are interested in proposals which look at new methods of research and artistic production which address issues of civic engagement and personal responsibility, local community and its diversity, demographics and equity, conflict resolution and social awareness, and the re-development of the urban environment as a holistic and spiritual enterprise.



Selected proposals will be offered:

* Three month residency at 18th Street Arts Center
* Fee ranging from $2500-5000 to complete the proposed project
* Will be presented during our quarterly Art Nights, as either an exhibition, or a public project

We encourage and will most closely look at proposals which use our gallery and project room as a laboratory/studio for new work and ideas. Artists will be encouraged to use our site as a point of interaction, production, and inquiry.

Proposals will be accepted from individual artists as well as teams of artists, and from curators. A catalogue will be published for all of the projects.



To submit a proposal:

Please send a concise proposal of no more than three pages by June 30, 2009; it should include the project description which relates to the theme Status Report: The Creative Economy; the names and a brief bio of project participants; up to 12 images of art works or previous projects which have bearing on the proposal (jpeg format, no larger than 6" x 4", 200dpi); and a preliminary budget as to how the funds will be used, showing any additional sources of support.

Big Visual Arts Day at the Westside

Hello All Mosaic Artists

Wanted to invite u to be a part of a Big Visual Arts Day at the Westside gathering at BHHS on March 29th, regardless of what gathering you normally go to.
We're transforming the lobby area into a Gallery and Live painting space for the series:
“A Beautiful Life: The Beatitudes of Jesus”
Matthew 5:8 – Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

The overarching theme is Children.

We'll have 2 Galleries: one of Art done by children and one of Art done by grown ups. ;)


• We're looking for several artists who will be able to paint live new paintings that relate to the bible verse or perhaps a piece already started so it can be finished there (or further developed).

• Also we need you all to submit already finished pieces that would relate in the themes for the "grown ups" Gallery, (please email submissions with picture, size and medium)

• We need many hands to help set up on the morning of the 29th arriving at 8:30 - 9 am. It will be a transformiation!!!

• And most of all pray for the team, the visual communication and the lives of all involved especially those who will witness the event and those who come for the first time to experience God.

It is important that you respond and commit ASAP and let us know how you will be able to serve and what we can count on.

LionLike Mindstate in I.E. Weekly

LionLike MindState, our spoken word venue, was featured in the latest edition of the I.E. Weekly, one of the largest publications on arts and culture in the Inland Empire. "Chino, CA - A poetry venue can be about more than just poetry. Just ask LionLike MindState emcee David M. Oliver (aka Judah 1), a nationally known poet who says, “I wanted an open mic but I wanted it different. I wanted a literacy program. I wanted to get into the prisons, to do writing workshops there to get the violence out, the anger out. People come to LionLike more for the community than for the poetry.”

The community begins with the LionLike crew—Judah 1, Adrienne Reed, Nathan Neighbour, DJ Mike Sincere, Treesje Powers, and Dana Love. Based in Chino, they are all in their mid-20s and, although they are a diverse group, this crew is universally restless, dynamic, and determined to break new ground, In turn, they rely on a larger community at their venue, Mosaic Inland in Chino. Mosaic Inland is part of a group of seven artist-oriented churches throughout California, but that doesn’t mean LionLike is a Christian venue—the mic is open to all and often features red-hot erotica or revolutionary politics.

Although some poetry venues are run like exclusive cliques, LionLike walks community like they talk it. From the minute you enter their cavernous Crash Lounge, you are treated like an old friend. The seating is on couches and easy chairs. Milk and cookies and other goodies are served. Every poet receives rapt attention and respect. Treesje is known for seeking out those in the crowd who may be too nervous to get up and read and encouraging them to take the stage. DJ Mike Sincere delivers funky and often hilarious commentary from behind the turntables.

LionLike has just published a chapbook featuring many of its regular poets. There’s also a place for those whose forte is other than poetry—LionLike invites visual artists to come and create with the poets and they also provide opportunities for dancers and for filmmakers (including a just-issued LionLike performance DVD). To go beyond your usual run of the mill open mics, they have special shows such as Ladies’ Night (120 people at the first one, run entirely by women) and the January 17th Presidential Inauguration/Martin Luther King Birthday show which drew over 200 people. There’s an acoustic music show, a comedy bit, an interfaith forum, a first anniversary shindig in April, and a Mother’s Day celebration. And the crew is looking to bust the margins—LionLike is currently raising money to send youth and adult teams to the National Poetry Slam later this year in West Palm Beach, Florida, marking the first time the IE has been represented in the 19-year-history of nationals. There are also plans to debut a monthly satellite venue in Norwalk.

But the idea of community goes beyond this dizzying array of culture, as there are philanthropic interests at root here too. One dollar from the meager four dollar door charge goes to Inland Empire non-profits with places like The House of Ruth, Serve the IE, and The Neighborhood House the benefactors. Not shying away from anything, LionLike organizes toy drives, food giveaways, and community barbecues and has plans for an outreach event at a homeless tent city.

Yet there can be no doubt that the core of LionLike MindState is poetry.

“Every time I hear a poet spit on our stage, I get a glimpse into the soul and story of another person journeying with me in this life,” says Nathan. Judah 1 adds, “Poetry changes lives. There are poets who will step into your situation and alter it, who will alter your mind, who will alter your spirit and will change your whole perception of life and worldview.”

Underneath everything is a philosophy. It begins with the premise that, contrary to popular reports, the Inland Empire has a thriving arts community and there’s little need to travel 30-plus miles to LA in that pursuit. As Nathan says, it’s “about living a life completely wide awake and striving to make the world around you better in the process.”

Adrienne is more concise in her explanation the philosophy, describing it as “being consistent, conscious, and bold.”

The LionLike MindState web site (lionlikemindstate.com) proclaims, “We are the voices of a revolution.” This is more about universality, sharing passions and direct camaraderie, says Judah 1.

“We’re not just a hip-hop venue,” he says. “We’re not a Black venue, we’re not a Caucasian venue, we’re not a Christian or a Muslim venue. Anybody can come, everybody’s respected. Our faces are all different, our thoughts are all different, our beliefs are all different, but yet we have this common bond called poetry. We use that and we just build it. I think that’s pretty revolutionary.”

Giving Children Hope Art Show: Looking for submissions

The organization Giving Children Hope will be hosting an Art Show in mid-April and are looking for artists to exhibit their work [specifically in response to the issue of human slavery]. I just happened to come across their site and of course immediately thought of Mosaic's community of artists. Alan Bruni will be in an upcoming art show in LA's downtown arts district.

The opening reception is during the December Downtown Art Walk which actually goes from 9am until 9pm though the party bus and the majority of people tend to come in the evening.

All you need to know is the basics (casting on, knit, purl stitches, and binding off) and a desire to empower young kids. This requires much individual attention so more volunteers would be needed.

Decorating t-shirts with bleach pens at transitional housing for victims of domestic violence. (location will be sent to those who commit to this activity and confidentiality form will need to be signed and brought with you)

Mural from Domestic Violence Shelter

Late this summer, a team went to a domestic violence shelter to paint a mural along a staircase wall leading up to the case management room. The goal was to make the women feel at peace and help the children of some of the women be comfortable in this new environment. In what had seemed like a cold and maybe even sterile place, our Visual Arts team helped create a safe haven that was solace for those leaving tormented homes.

The large red piece depicted in the images is 'Dam' (pronounced 'dawm'), 26'x116", Dam is the ancient hebrew word for of blood, an integral concept of one's vitality and an underlying principal of our dependence upon the unseen. As a sacred concept, it is from the same root word for the name of the first man 'A-dam', taken from the red dust of the earth, or 'dm'.

Some colleagues and I are putting together a Silent Photography Auction with Mosaic and Awaken Humanity.

This will be held to specifically raise money and awareness for the work being done through these organizations in Africa.

This year's theme is "Beauty in Unexpected Places".

The silent auction will run alongside Mosaic's Annual Christmas show, which is seen by over 500 people.

There are 6 paintings there already that will be permanently displayed, and a few of them are the ones featured in Wide Awake, written by Erwin McManus. This is a great opportunity to see the originals.

War as a way of Life

Spend September with Mayan Visual Artists

We're going to get together and celebrate being crazy Mosaic Vis Arts people, because you are. Here are a few ways how:

Sunday I'm host for 30x30, a month's worth of dinner parties across LA. So that's the 7th, from 6-10PM. I live a block from the Mayan, so come before the 8 or after the 6 and eat lots of pasta, salad, bread, and dessert TBD. I'm at 409 W Olympic Blvd Apt 503. Rattle the door downstairs on the N side of Olympic (or check the side door 2 steps to your left, sometimes that one is just wide open), the guard will probably let you in, sign his clipboard, and head on up. If there's any issues getting in, absolutely call me: 651.357.6770. And please RSVP this so I have an idea how many will be attending...

Thursday the 11th is the Downtown Art Walk (http://www.downtownartwalk.com/); it's always free and we start at the MOCA around 5PM. Afterwards we can crash at my apt and eat waffles and ice cream and soak in the jacuzzi.

Friday the 12th there will be jazz at the LACMA starring the Henry Franklin Quintet. http://www.lacma.org/programs/FridayNightJazz.aspx. Now, the museum is free post-5PM, parking is free post-7PM, jazz goes from 6-8PM, and the galleries are open until 9PM. This means me and anyone else in my car (volunteers?) will be hitting it up at 7PM on the dot for 2 hours of jazz and art. LACMA's got an exhibit up I'd really like to check out: the Cheech Marin collection, which means 80s-90s Chicano! http://www.lacma.org/art/ExhibMarin.aspx

And to cap off that Friday, there's a gallery opening to show off the paintings/live body painting of a friend of ours, Danny Setiawan. I don't even know what live body painting is, but I'm intrigued! And there's gonna be a DJ and other artists. Cheers! That's at 9:30PM and goes till 2AM and is on 144 N. La Brea. $10 at the door, but $7 if you tell me or Danny and we RSVP you to get you on the guest list.

The Delicate Soldier

Victoria Silverio has been working with a cast of 18 talented people on the production of her script:
the delicate soldier, an autobiographical story of truth and hope.

We pray that her story reaches people who have struggled with: dysfunctional relationships, substance abuse, abortion, and eating disorders. The goal of the delicate soldier project is to touch lives and offer support.

The show is FREE and opens: Sept. 6th and 7th at 2pm in the Santa Monica Library Auditorium.

Following the show, art work will be available to purchase and supportive community resources will be made available to those who are interested.
